When I watched Jurassic Park for the first time, it had a huge impact on me. It was a game changer, and became one of those franchises I aspired to contribute to when I started working in the VFX industry 10 years ago. 24 years after the start of the franchise, I had the chance to model some assets for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, most notably the Arcadia, the ship used to evacuate the island.
Beginning with a very basic model, the design evolved with some more detail on the hull and the decks. Further into the model build, we realized we had to see inside the bow and stern of the ship, which allowed me to design and build opening mechanisms, and the interior cargo hold of the ship. The ship is featured in a night time shot at a dock, which needed some design and layout work as well. I was able to propose some designs, and follow through with a build of a foreground environment complete with some vehicle builds exiting the ship.
Beyond the ship, I contributed with several other builds, including some heavy trucks transporting the dinosaurs, the glass gyrosphere during the island escape sequence, and the fallen tree in the same sequence.
Fantastic team to work with, and one of the more fun shows I've had the chance to be involved in!
